Data centers & Wisconsin's electric bills
On April 24, 2026, Wisconsin regulators approved a rewritten We Energies rate for very large customers that requires data centers to pay the full cost of new generation built to serve them; We Energies has since asked regulators to relax the order's credit requirements. A separate fight over who builds transmission for the Port Washington data-center campus escalated to federal regulators in June 2026.
- 2026-04-24 - The Public Service Commission of Wisconsin unanimously approved We Energies' very-large-customer rate for data centers after cutting the eligibility threshold from 500 MW to 100 MW, extending minimum contract terms from 10 to 15 years, and removing a capacity-only option that would have let data centers cover only 75% of certain new generating-plant costs. - 2026-04 - We Energies projects data center customers will cover $5 billion in costs tied to new generation projects in 2027-2028, and says data center projects including Microsoft's Mount Pleasant campus and the Port Washington campus could double its energy demand by 2030. - 2026-06-10 - We Energies asked the PSC on June 10, 2026 to ease the April order's credit standards, under which data-center developers rated below A- must post financial guarantees - a requirement Oracle's BBB-rated Port Washington subsidiary said would exceed $100 million per year. - 2026-06 - American Transmission Company asked FERC in June 2026 to re-bid or reevaluate MISO's award of an eastern Wisconsin transmission project - won by Blackstone-owned Viridon with a roughly $350 million bid, about half of MISO's cost estimate - that must connect the Port Washington data-center campus by December 2027, with costs recovered from electricity customers through a regulator-approved return on equity. Water
Electricity delivered in Wisconsin carries 3.84 liters of water per kilowatt-hour consumed at the power plants supplying it (1.57 L/kWh excluding hydropower reservoir evaporation), against a national average of 4.28. That is below the national figure, and it is a property of the grid here rather than of any one building: a data center drawing 100 GWh a year in Wisconsin accounts for about 101.4 million gallons of power-plant water before it cools anything.
