Data centers & Ohio's electric bills

The Public Utilities Commission of Ohio approved an AEP Ohio data-center tariff in July 2025 requiring large new data-center customers to pay for at least 85% of subscribed energy under 12-year contracts, a decision now on appeal at the Ohio Supreme Court by the Ohio Manufacturers' Association Energy Group. Separately, AEP Ohio's transmission rider rose on April 1, 2026, adding about $7.90 per month for a typical residential customer, with grid expansion for large loads including data centers among the cited drivers.

Water

Electricity delivered in Ohio carries 1.96 liters of water per kilowatt-hour consumed at the power plants supplying it (1.30 L/kWh excluding hydropower reservoir evaporation), against a national average of 4.28. That is below the national figure, and it is a property of the grid here rather than of any one building: a data center drawing 100 GWh a year in Ohio accounts for about 51.9 million gallons of power-plant water before it cools anything.
