Data centers & Indiana's electric bills
Indiana residential electric bills rose more than 17% on average in 2025, the steepest increase since at least 2005, prompting an IURC investigative inquiry and statewide listening tour in spring 2026. Utilities say new transmission costs to serve data centers are allocated 100% to those customers, but a consumer group is contesting a Duke Energy filing it says shifts $216 million in Meta-related upgrades onto all Duke Indiana customers, and Indianapolis's council voted in August 2026 to pause new data centers through 2027.

- 2026-08 - The Citizens Action Coalition says Duke Energy is shifting $216 million in network upgrades for Meta's Jeffersonville data center onto all Duke Indiana customers in Cause No. 45647 TDSIC-5, and that Indiana Michigan Power is shifting more than $400 million in grid-connection costs for Google (Fort Wayne) and Amazon (New Carlisle) data centers onto its customers in Cause No. 46301; both allocations are contested by the group. Water
Electricity delivered in Indiana carries 3.25 liters of water per kilowatt-hour consumed at the power plants supplying it (1.48 L/kWh excluding hydropower reservoir evaporation), against a national average of 4.28. That is below the national figure, and it is a property of the grid here rather than of any one building: a data center drawing 100 GWh a year in Indiana accounts for about 85.8 million gallons of power-plant water before it cools anything.
